Polarised Lenses Explained

Polarised lenses are designed to reduce intense reflected glare from surfaces such as roads, water and wet pavements. While ordinary sunglasses reduce brightness, polarised lenses go one step further by filtering specific reflected light, making vision more comfortable in bright conditions.

What are polarised lenses?

Polarised lenses contain a special filter that blocks much of the horizontally reflected light responsible for glare. This allows you to see more clearly and comfortably in bright outdoor conditions.

They do not simply make the world darker. Their purpose is to reduce distracting reflections while improving visual comfort.

What is glare?

Glare occurs when sunlight reflects from flat surfaces such as water, roads, snow, car bonnets and wet pavements. These reflections can become extremely bright, making it harder to see detail and causing eye fatigue.

Polarised lenses are specifically designed to reduce this type of reflected light.

How do polarised lenses work?

The filter inside a polarised lens blocks much of the horizontally reflected light while allowing useful light to pass through. The result is improved contrast, less squinting and a clearer view of your surroundings.

Benefits of polarised lenses

  • Excellent glare reduction
  • Improved comfort
  • Sharper contrast
  • Reduced eye strain
  • Ideal for driving
  • Excellent around water
  • Comfortable in snow

Who should choose polarised lenses?

Polarised lenses are especially popular with drivers, golfers, sailors, anglers, walkers, skiers and anyone spending long periods outdoors.

They can also be an excellent everyday choice if bright reflections regularly bother your eyes.

Are there any disadvantages?

Although polarised lenses are excellent for reducing glare, they are not perfect for every situation.

  • Some LCD screens can appear darker.
  • Some aircraft instruments may be affected.
  • They are usually more expensive than standard tinted lenses.

For most everyday wearers these disadvantages are minor compared with the comfort benefits.

Polarised vs standard sunglasses

Standard Sunglasses Polarised Sunglasses
Reduce brightness Reduce brightness and glare
General outdoor use Driving, water and bright reflections
Usually lower cost Premium option

Are polarised lenses worth the extra money?

If glare regularly affects your vision, the answer is usually yes. The improvement in comfort while driving or spending time outdoors can be significant.

If you rarely wear sunglasses or mainly use them for short periods, standard prescription sunglasses may be perfectly suitable.

Scott's advice

Polarised lenses are one of the upgrades that people tend to appreciate every time they wear them. If glare bothers you while driving, near water or during holidays, they are often worth the additional cost.

If your sunglasses are mainly for occasional use in mild sunshine, a standard UV-protective tint may be all you need.
